Coach is one of the most famous makers of designer handbags in the world, renowned for making some of the best designer handbags at affordable prices. Coach is a family-run business which was established in Manhattan in the USA in 1941.
It manufacturers mainly designer handbags and purses, it nevertheless also makes briefcases, luggage and things such as watches, scarves, belts, sunglasses, shoes and umbrellas, leather bags and wallets. It even has an office furniture department.

The 'Coach' label was created back in the 1960s, when Lillian and Miles Cahn, decided to create their own collecion of retail goods. They already owned a wholsesale manufacturing business for handbags, and as they were great admirers of Bonnie Cashin they asked her to become their principal designer. She was too busy however and declined their offer, but the Cahsn said they would wait until she was free. The wait lasted two years but in 1962 Cashin finally started work as the designer for their new 'Coach' brand of designer bags.
Cashin set about initiating a revolution in the world of handbag manufacture. She liked to see her handbags as works of art, and dyed them in her favorite colors : - pink, orange, yellow and green. She also created linings made of outstanding linen from Belgium, cotton from Mexico, she also hired designer Dorothy Liebes to design tweed linings. Before this, handbags, to paraphrase Henry Ford, had been any color as long as it was black or brown. Customers were thrilled by the new shapes, colors and textures. In addition to this revolution in colors, all Coach handbags were made to be useful, having wide openings and outside pockets for coins etc....
Cashin also designed the famous Coach hallmark brass toggle .
Coach is possibly unique among luxury handbag designers as it creates large volumes of bags, thus saving money by economies of scale and obtaining improved profit margins.
Coach's continued success is due in part to its reputation for creating 'affordable luxury'. It manufactures luxury bags but sells them at a price that makes them accessible to a wider number of people.
Its solid reputation ensures that it sells lots of its bags abroad, especially in Japan.
